Ethics & Sustainability

Made with Upcycled Products

Every item in our handmade collection is made with upcycled, recycled, or repurposed materials whenever possible. That means making umpteen trips to the thrift store for t-shirts to print on, carefully washing secondhand baseball caps, and scavenging our neighbors’ discarded Christmas trees for wood to cut into tree cookie earrings.

Printed to Order

Each product from our bookplate collection is printed to order. Print on demand is an antidote to fast fashion and rampant consumption. Since each garment and product is printed to order, there isn’t a pile of back stock sitting in a warehouse to go out of style and go to waste, winding up in a landfill or processed in unsustainable ways.

Base Brands

It’s important to us that the companies that produce our base garments and products match our sustainability and social responsibility missions. Here’s some background on those brands and their ethics.

How We Hope to Improve

There’s always room for improvement, and we’re no exception. The Nasty Naturalist is a small but growing business, and as we expand we will keep sustainable practices at the heart of our operations. Here are a few of the ways we want to improve moving forward.

Packaging

We know it’s a little weird to order two products from the same website and have them arrive in separate packages. That’s double the waste, but that’s because we have contracts with different print providers (and handmade items shipped from our Montana studio!) so we can offer the most nature nerdage on different types of items. In the future, we’d like to be able to offer compostable packaging, with everything shipped from the same place.

Supply Chain

We’d love to be able to give our customers a behind-the-scenes look at every step of our supply chain process, from the factories that produce our base garments and packaging, to our printers and distribution partners.

Local Sourcing

As we grow, we’re committed to working with production companies in the Montana community, where we’re based. That puts dollars back into the local community, helping create jobs and invigorate the local economy.
